My shoulders hurt and my thighs are bruised from the tom-tom drum banging against my legs. I stick plasters over blisters on my fingers, wash my hair and floss my teeth for an extra-long time to give myself the illusion that something is under control. I check the band’s WhatsApp message thread, take my drum and go off to play. And the days go by: ‘five, six, seven, eight’.

Every time someone is arrested the crowd cheers and chants ‘We love you.’ This confuses the police who are trained to believe that being arrested is a bad thing. I watch people either being walked away if they don’t resist arrest, or being carried if they do. So much courage. I feel a total wimp.

One evening we play at a road block for over an hour. The occasional policeman wanders over, but they have obviously decided the band is just pure fun. Oxford Street is so much better with just pedestrians and pedal bikes. The people have ‘reclaimed the streets’. Surely with most of Central London taken over with the aim of saving our planet, surely our government has to listen?
